Ceramics and pottery kilns fire clay objects, transforming them into durable and finished products through high-temperature processes. Traditional kilns like the Manabigama and Anagama are wood-fired kilns, often used in artistic ceramics, where temperatures can exceed 1,200°C. These kilns operate by burning wood, creating a unique firing atmosphere that interacts with the clay and glaze, producing a one-of-a-kind finish.

Anagama kilns are large, tunnel-like structures where pottery is loaded and fired for several days, while Manabigama kilns are smaller, more efficient versions used for shorter firings. Tunnel kilns, commonly used in industrial ceramics production, offer continuous firing capabilities, where pottery moves slowly through various temperature zones on a conveyor belt. All these kilns require refractory materials to maintain high temperatures and protect the kiln structure.

The refractories used in ceramics and pottery kilns must withstand high temperatures, thermal cycling, and combustion gas or ash exposure. Dense and insulating firebricks, which provide the thermal mass needed to retain heat for extended periods, are often used in the walls and floors.

In tunnel kilns, where consistent temperature control is essential, insulating firebricks and ceramic fiber products are commonly used to enhance energy efficiency while maintaining thermal stability. Monolithic refractories, offering flexibility and ease of application, are frequently used in kiln construction and repair. These refractories ensure the kiln maintains the desired temperature profiles while protecting the structure from thermal and mechanical stress.

Larkin Refractory Solutions is a trusted partner of the ceramics and pottery community, delivering supplies for numerous kilns. In addition to supplying materials, Larkin offers technical support and on-time delivery, ensuring that kiln operators can maintain and repair their kilns without significant downtime. Whether for artisanal pottery or industrial ceramics production, Larkin’s involvement helps ensure the longevity and performance of kilns.
